ADVICE ON A GOOD IMITATION
01. Make sure your lingo is un-American-ised! Don't say 'hot' say 'fit', etc., and you're already half-way there.
some British words: hot='fit', 'buff'; ugly='ming'; ugly person='minger'; person with a well-built body is='tonk'. If you want to emphasise something, put 'well' in front of it.
e.g: He was well fit; they're well funny.)
02. A British accent is basically a much rounder and posher Australian accent. Get that accent down first and then round your vowels. Don't flatten them too much, or you'll end up sounding like you popped straight out of the bush in the outback somewhere.
03. If you're imitating Mr.Hunter, his is actually slightly Northern, example:
'Call yourself our mother, woman?'
(sounds like 'call yarsilf our mutha, woomen?')
You're going to sound more Lankashire than London, but if that's what you're going for, feel free.
04. Don't clip the accent too much or you'll sound like a spastic version of the Queen!
05. Here's a mini-phonetic guide of a couple of phrases to practice:
- How doo yoo doo?
- Wood yoo lyke sum tee?
- Harree Pohtter is my fayvorit moovie/book.
- I luv thuh Weeslee twins.
You get the idea. Round off the vowels.
06. Finally, whatever you do, never let your inhibitions get the better of you, or you'll start drifting and the accent will disappear altogether.
